Today the EU Parliament formally adopted the new General Data Protection Regulations, after 4 long years in the making.

The regulation will come into force 20 days after it has been published in the EU Official Journal (expect this to be May or June of this year). From then there is a 2 year transition period from the old legislation to the new regulations “going live” in 2018.

All businesses and charities now need to get themselves ready for the biggest change that is happening to data protection law in the last 20 years.

The new Regulations include:

• The need for businesses to give individuals more information about what they will do with the personal data collected from them
• Stronger enforcement for non-compliance and fines of up to 4% of the total global annual turnover of a business
• The right for an individual to be forgotten
• The need for certain businesses to have a dedicated Data Protection Officer
